Faith & Fashion: Why What You Wear Can Be a Ministry

Clothing is powerful. It communicates identity, beliefs, energy, and message. Wearing faith-inspired apparel isn’t about being flashy — it’s about planting seeds…

I used to be in Real Estate and one of the things that stood out to me was persons distributing flyers and wearing branded company apparel that made people ask about their Real Estate practise. Whenever people saw the log, they asked about the brand. There is actual research that was shared with me throughout my time in that industry and I always wondered why this was not done for the Kingdom of God.

Research on the power of branding in purchase behaviour

According to Google (January 22, 2026):

“Based on current marketing research and established principles, it generally takes 5 to 7 impressions for a consumer to remember a brand, and in the modern digital age, this number often increases, with some studies suggesting 8 to 20+ interactions are needed for a purchase decision.

Here are the key articles and models supporting these numbers:

1. The "Rule of 7" (The Classic Standard)

Source: University of Maryland - Communications and Public Affairs

The Principle: This classic principle asserts that a potential customer needs to see or hear a marketing message at least seven times before they take action and make a purchase. It is designed to build familiarity, credibility, and trust.

Key Takeaway: Repetition is essential for recognition, particularly for high-value items where customers require higher trust.

2. The 3-7-27 Rule (Modernized Stages)

Source: Simon-Kucher (Beyond the logo)

The Principle: This, a more nuanced, modern framework suggests:

  • 3 times to notice who you are.

  • 7 times to start remembering you.

  • 27 times to build enough trust and familiarity to consider you a loyal option.

Key Takeaway: It takes significant repetition (up to 27 times) to build strong, lasting brand loyalty, not just a single purchase.

3. The 8-20+ Rule (Modern Digital Age)

Source: LinkedIn (JKohlbach) & SoCorro Marketing

The Principle: In the digital age, where consumers see 4,000–10,000 ads per day, the "Rule of 7" has increased to closer to 8–20+ interactions.

Key Takeaway: For expensive or high-ticket items, the number of touchpoints needed to overcome hesitation is much higher.

Factors Affecting the Number of Exposures

Price Point: Low-cost products require fewer interactions (impulse buys), while high-ticket items require more.

Format: The "Rule of 7" is most effective when the brand uses multiple channels (e.g., email, social, and web) rather than the same ad seven times, which can lead to fatigue.

Consistency: The key is to maintain a consistent message across all channels, as this reinforces the brand identity, as detailed in Shopify's Guide to Consistency.

How do you apply this in the Real-World?

Conversation Starters

Imagine walking your dog, then being in the gym, and then going on a delivery run for your business and everyone who encountered you that day stopped and looked at your hoodie that morning? Or think about everyone in your office kitchen looking at the faith-based message about God on your hot cup? Or even this, introducing yourself and your business at a networking site and someone says that they like your polo shirt and bag about Jesus?

Having the scripture or an eye catching message about God or some faith-based encouraging message makes people curious. It works the same way wearing a branded company shirt works at a networking event or while shopping in the supermarket. People will look at you anyway so there is nothing wrong with sharing the message with someone in your proximity about God and using  that to talk about your brand, your walk with God, your new product offering, or build a new connection. Try it with any of our products!

Silent Evanlegism

The opportunities for silent evangelism have not been taken up in the body of Christ as much as it could have been. So many brands push things in our face and down our throats practically with ads about all sorts of worldly things everyday. You can use your apparel as a fun conversation starter while you are waiting for your Uber or Taxi to share the gospel about Jesus Christ. Big corporations do it. Why can’t we tell people about God as True Believers in this manner.

As a matter of fact, it can encourage the people you interact with who are fighting battles the people around them know nothing about. I have personally witnessed people being confronted by 5 vehicles with bible scriptures while I spoke with them about God and studying His word as we drove slowly through traffic at around 9 am. The someone I spoke with literally said that they felt like it was all the confirmation they needed to read a scripture that day and were open to discuss God, prophetic gifts (1 Corinthians 12: 7 - 12), our respective church experiences, seeking God despite church hurt, and them further reflecting about God throughout our time together that day until about 5 pm. Fine, it is not a T-Shirt but every scripture resonated with the someone I was speaking with and each scripture offered the specific encouragement that they NEEDED to hear that day based on what they were experiencing. Steve Green was not wrong when he sang in his song “People Need The Lord” (YouTube it when you can, you will love it. Trust me!).

Personal Empowerment

I noticed how Christian content creators with merchandise for their YouTube platforms would promote it in their YouTube Videos and they were proud of it. I noticed people wearing their favourite brands that were popular at the time or some bold T-Shirt design and they felt empowered and proud of it. I would see people get baptised and wear a t-shirt with some random faith based message and it made them so confident to walk in their new identity as children of God while talking about their new found faith as people asked about their shirts. It was so wonderful to see those people beam with joy as they confidently talked about their new step in walking with God.

Closing points

It is more than just pushing your faith on people. It is being confident to align yourself to Brand Jesus and declaring to the world that I know the King of Kings and Lord of Lord. Do you? That in and of itself is empowering AND you get to inspire others in the process to want to learn more too. What can be better than that!
